Bubble chart of 26 Legend of Zelda releases, each placed by release year on the horizontal axis and by reported lifetime sales in millions on the vertical axis, with bubble size also set by sales. Breath of the Wild (2017) is the largest at 34.06 million and Tears of the Kingdom (2023) next at 22.71 million; both are red, marking figures Nintendo publishes, as is the much smaller The Wind Waker HD at 2.37 million. The remaining 23 bubbles are grey, marking community-compiled figures, and run from Twilight Princess at 8.93 million down to Four Swords Adventures at 0.94 million. Echoes of Wisdom, released in 2024, is not on the list and is not drawn.

TL;DR: Which Zelda Game Sold the Most?

Breath of the Wild, and it is one of only three figures Nintendo will confirm

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the best-selling Zelda game at 34.06 million copies on Switch, a figure Nintendo published in its Top Selling Title Sales Units table as of 30 June 2026. Tears of the Kingdom is second at 22.71 million, also Nintendo's own. Together those two account for 37.0% of the 153.38 million this list adds up to, a sum that is ours. Every other figure here is community-compiled and carries no citation. Read the ranking as the best list anyone has assembled, not as Nintendo's own accounting.

! What the ranking shows:

  • •
A Switch-era top two: Breath of the Wild (34.06M) and Tears of the Kingdom (22.71M) are the only releases above 10 million, and both are Nintendo-confirmed.
  • •
A long tail: The bottom 13 of 26 releases add up to 33.91 million between them, less than Breath of the Wild alone.
  • •
Four decades, four Switch games: The four Switch releases on the list total 67.55 million, 44.0% of the whole, from a catalogue that starts in 1986.

? What to treat carefully:

  • •
3 of 26 figures are Nintendo’s: Nintendo publishes only a top ten per platform, so most Zelda games never appear in its tables at all.
  • •
The community list is already stale: It gives Breath of the Wild 32.81 million and Tears of the Kingdom 21.73 million. Nintendo’s own current figures are higher.
  • •
One game is missing: Echoes of Wisdom, released in September 2024, is absent from the list and so is absent from this ranking.

Zelda has no equivalent of Capcom’s Platinum Titles page. Nintendo confirms the two biggest sellers and almost nothing else, so a complete Zelda ranking can only exist as a community effort, and should be labelled as one.

The sourcing, stated first

Zelda Sales by Game: Three Figures From Nintendo, Twenty-Three From the Community

This ranking is built from a community-compiled list of 26 Legend of Zelda releases. Before anything else: that list carries no citations. Not one row on it names a source. We checked every figure we could against Nintendo's own disclosures, and three of the 26 are confirmed there. The rest are shown as the community reports them, because an uncited number is still a number somebody can check, and hiding it behind an average would be worse. That is a different standard from the other posts in this series, where every figure comes from the publisher. It is stated here so the ranking can be read for what it is.

The Three Numbers That Define This Ranking

One confirmed leader, one confirmed runner-up, and the share of the list that nobody official has checked.

Best-Selling Zelda · 34.06M

34.06M

Breath of the Wild on Switch, in Nintendo’s Top Selling Title Sales Units as of 30 June 2026. The community list still says 32.81 million.

Second · 22.71M

22.71M

Tears of the Kingdom, also Nintendo’s own figure as of 30 June 2026, and also higher than the 21.73 million the community list carries.

Uncited rows · 23 of 26

23 rows

Nintendo publishes a top ten per platform and nothing below it, so 23 of these releases have no official figure at all.

Breath of the Wild by the Numbers

  • Switch share 44 % The four Switch releases total 67.55 million of the list’s 153.38 million. Our arithmetic.
  • Top two share 37 % Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom together, as a share of the same total. Our arithmetic.
  • Confirmed by Nintendo 38.6 % 59.14 million of the 153.38 million carries a Nintendo figure. The rest does not.

The leader

Which Zelda Game Sold the Most?

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the best-selling game in the series at 34.06 million copies on Nintendo Switch. That figure is Nintendo's own, printed in its Top Selling Title Sales Units table as of 30 June 2026, and it is the single most reliable number on this page.

Tears of the Kingdom follows at 22.71 million, from the same table and the same date. No other Zelda release is above 10 million. Twilight Princess is third on the list at 8.93 million, and that figure is a community one, combining 7.50 million on Wii with 1.43 million on GameCube.

The gap between the top two and everything else is the clearest thing the chart shows. Breath of the Wild alone outsells the bottom 13 releases on this list combined, which add up to 33.91 million. Both of those sums are ours, taken across figures that do not share a basis or a date, so treat them as scale rather than precision.

The disclosure gap

Why Only Three of These Figures Come From Nintendo

Nintendo does publish per-title sales, but only as a top ten for each platform. The Switch table lists ten titles and two of them are Zelda games. The Wii U table lists ten and one is Zelda: The Wind Waker HD at 2.37 million, as of 31 March 2026. The 3DS table lists ten and none is a Zelda game at all.

That is the whole of Nintendo's current per-title disclosure for this series: three figures. Link's Awakening on Switch, Skyward Sword HD, Ocarina of Time 3D and A Link Between Worlds all sold enough to sit high on this ranking and none of them cracks its platform's top ten, so Nintendo has never given them a number.

Older platforms are worse served. Nintendo stopped maintaining tables for the Nintendo 64, GameCube, Game Boy, DS and Wii, so the figures for Ocarina of Time, A Link to the Past, Majora's Mask and the rest cannot be checked against anything Nintendo publishes today. This is the opposite problem to a series like Monster Hunter, where Capcom keeps one page listing every title past a million and updates it quarterly.

What the check found

Where the Community List Is Already Out of Date

Of the three figures we could verify, one matched and two did not. The Wind Waker HD is listed at 2.37 million and Nintendo says 2.37 million, exactly. Breath of the Wild is listed at 32.81 million on Switch and Nintendo says 34.06 million. Tears of the Kingdom is listed at 21.73 million and Nintendo says 22.71 million.

Both misses are in the same direction: the community figures are roughly a million copies behind, which is what happens when a number is copied once and not revisited. We have used Nintendo's current figures for those two rows and left the rest as reported. That is also a warning about the other 23, which have no check available at all.

One release is missing outright. Echoes of Wisdom shipped in September 2024 and does not appear on the list, so it does not appear in this ranking either. It is not a small omission: a mainline Zelda from the Switch era would almost certainly place inside the top ten here.

The shape of the catalogue

What the Spread Shows: Four Decades, One Dominant Era

Laid out by release year, the series divides cleanly. The four Switch releases on this list total 67.55 million copies, 44.0% of the 153.38 million the whole list adds up to, from a catalogue that opens in February 1986. Both percentages are ours.

Before 2017, no Zelda release is reported above 8.93 million. After it, two are. Part of that is the Switch's own install base, and part is that a modern release stays on sale for years while older ones were tied to hardware that stopped shipping. The chart does not separate those two causes and neither should the reader.

The handheld line is the quiet one. Phantom Hourglass at 4.76 million, Ocarina of Time 3D at 6.44 million and A Link Between Worlds at 4.26 million each outsold Majora's Mask on the Nintendo 64, which the list puts at 3.36 million. None of those four figures is confirmed by anyone.

Rows marked Nintendo come from Nintendo's Top Selling Title Sales Units tables: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom as of 30 June 2026, The Wind Waker HD as of 31 March 2026. Breath of the Wild's figure is Switch only; the community list adds 1.70 million for the Wii U version, which is not included here. Rows marked Community come from a community-compiled list that carries no citations, and two of the three figures on it that could be checked were about a million copies low. Twilight Princess combines Wii and GameCube, and Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages are counted as one row, both as the source list presents them. Echoes of Wisdom (2024) is absent from the source list and so from this table. Totals and percentages elsewhere in this post are our arithmetic across figures that do not share a basis or a date.

What would change this

What Would Make This Ranking Official

Only Nintendo can. The series needs what Capcom gives Monster Hunter: one maintained page listing every title past a threshold, restated as the numbers move. Nintendo's top-ten-per-platform format cannot produce that, because a franchise competing with Mario Kart and Pokemon for ten slots will always lose most of its catalogue.

Short of that, two things would help this page. Nintendo's quarterly results could move Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom again, which we would pick up. And an Echoes of Wisdom disclosure, if it ever reaches a platform top ten, would add the one obviously missing row.
