Adolf Hitler

Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) was the Austrian-born leader of the National Socialist German Workers' Party who became Chancellor of Germany in January 1933 and destroyed the German republic within eighteen months. His regime began the Second World War in Europe with the invasion of Poland in 1939 and carried out the systematic murder of some six million Jews, alongside millions of Roma, Poles, Soviet prisoners, disabled people and others. He killed himself in Berlin on 30 April 1945. The war he started killed tens of millions and remade the political order of the world. Michael Hart ranked him 39th among history's most influential people.

Napoleon Bonaparte

Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) rose from minor Corsican gentry to command the armies of revolutionary France, seized power in 1799 and crowned himself Emperor in 1804. He fought roughly seventy battles and lost about eight, dominated continental Europe for a decade, and was destroyed by the invasion of Russia in 1812 and finally at Waterloo in 1815. The Napoleonic Code he commissioned - equality before the law, secure property, secular civil administration - outlived the empire entirely and remains the foundation of legal systems in dozens of countries. Michael Hart ranked him 34th among history's most influential people.
