Step line chart on a time axis of the Persona series' worldwide cumulative copies, in millions, at six publisher-dated points from 3 December 2019 to 8 June 2026. The line starts at 11.1 million and ends at 30 million, passing 13 (July 2020), 16.8 (November 2022), 22.6 (March 2024) and 27 million (August 2025). Every label carries a plus sign except 22.6 million, the only exact count. Sega's 11.0 million restatement of the first milestone, its June 2026 restatement of the last, nine totals printed in Sega's reports and a repeated 23.5 million are not drawn.

TL;DR: How Many Copies Has the Persona Series Sold?

Six publisher-dated totals, two re-releases and three undated lines

Atlus says the Persona series passed 30 million copies worldwide on 8 June 2026, up from more than 11.1 million in December 2019, about 2.7 times in 6.5 years. Seven of eight publisher-dated totals are 'more than' floors; only 22.6 million (5 March 2024) is exact. Two re-releases, Persona 5 Royal and Persona 3 Reload, made up 73.9% of the series' copies in the year to March 2026. Sega's three sub-series figures carry no as-of date, and Persona 3 and 4 cannot be ranked.

! What the Staircase Shows:

  • •
Long Flats: Atlus milestones came 232 to 861 days apart.
  • •
Two Games Carry It: Two re-releases supply most of the latest year.
  • •
Floors, Not Counts: 'More than 30 million' sets no upper bound.

? The Numbers Behind the Climb:

  • •
    Series Total: 11.1M+ (Dec 2019) to 30M+ (Jun 2026)
  • •
    Two-Title Share: 55.7%, 70.7%, 73.9% (years to March 2024 to 2026)
  • •
    Lifetime to 31 Mar 2026: Royal 8.66M, Reload 2.97M

The line records announcements, not a meter reading. Recent growth leans on two re-releases, while the older lines hold undated floors.

Overview

Why a Rising Line Needs a Careful Reading

Persona's headline total moves only when a publisher says so. Atlus announces round-number milestones on its Persona Channel site; Sega Sammy prints totals in reports and investor material, often without saying which date they describe. This story uses only totals a publisher dated, draws them as steps, and keeps Sega's undated sub-series figures in a table. The aim is the cause behind the climb, and an honest account of what the numbers cannot say.

The Three Numbers That Define Persona's Climb

How far the total has come, what two re-releases supply, and the longest wait between milestones.

The Series Total · 30M+

30M+ Copies

Atlus announced on 8 June 2026 that the Persona series had passed 30 million copies worldwide, and Sega Sammy's September 2026 column repeats it as of June 2026. It is a floor, not a count. Atlus's first figure on the chart is more than 11.1 million on 3 December 2019, so the total has risen about 2.7 times.

The Two-Title Share · 73.9%

73.9%

In the year to March 2026, Sega counted 3.22 million Persona copies, and 2.38 million were Persona 5 Royal (1.42 million) and Persona 3 Reload (0.96 million). The same pair made up 70.7% a year earlier and 55.7% two years earlier, so recent growth rests increasingly on two re-releases rather than new games.

The Longest Wait · 861 Days

861 Days

Atlus announced 13 million copies on 22 July 2020 and 16.8 million on 30 November 2022, 861 days apart, the longest gap on the chart. Sega's tables show why it was slow: the series printed 1.3 million copies in the year to March 2022, down from 3.0 million the year before, the lowest of the six years they cover.

Persona by the Numbers

  • 22.6M, the One Exact Count 22.6 M Atlus gave 22.6 million 'as of 5 March 2024', the only exact figure of the eight.
  • 8.66M, Persona 5 Royal's Lifetime Total 8.66 M Sega's cumulative figure to 31 March 2026, including the 2022 remaster but not the original Persona 5.
  • 3.22M, a Year of Series Copies 3.22 M Copies in the year to March 2026, down 36% from 5.06 million two years earlier.

Reading the Staircase

Why Persona's Total Moves in Steps, Not a Slope

A step is the honest shape. When Atlus said on 22 July 2020 that the series had passed 13 million copies, that was a floor, and it stayed the best public statement until the next announcement. A diagonal between two thresholds would draw a measurement nobody published.

The time axis matters as much. Atlus's milestones came 232, 861, 461, 514 and 311 days apart, and even spacing would hide that the 861 days between July 2020 and November 2022 were the slowest stretch.

Sega's yearly figures confirm it. The series printed 3.0 million copies in the year to March 2021 and 1.3 million in the year to March 2022, the lowest of the six full years its tables cover. An Atlus statutory notice gave about 15 million as of March 2021, but that date is inferred from a fiscal-year filing, so it stays off the chart.

Floors lag the crossing, too. On 1 August 2025 Atlus said Persona 3 Reload had reached 2 million copies. Sega's yearly figures for the same game had already passed that: 1.22 million in the year to March 2024 and 0.79 million in the year to March 2025. Those two add to 2.01 million by 31 March 2025, four months before the announcement. The sum is ours; Sega prints the yearly figures and gives only one cumulative, 2.97 million through March 2026.

The Biggest Steps

Which Steps Were Largest, and What Was on Sale?

Between 30 November 2022 and 5 March 2024 the total rose from more than 16.8 million to 22.6 million, about 5.8 million copies in 461 days, or roughly 4.6 million a year. The 861 days before it averaged about 1.6 million a year. These are floor-to-floor rates, so only indicators.

Two launches sit inside that stretch. Persona 5 Royal's multi-platform remaster arrived on 21 October 2022, and Sega puts Royal at 1.82 million copies in the year to March 2023, up from 0.35 million. Persona 3 Reload launched on 2 February 2024, and its 1.22 million copies in two months were just over half of the series' 2.39 million for the quarter. Totals count every game, so this shows timing, not proof of cause.

After March 2024 the pace eases: 27 million by 1 August 2025, then 30 million by 8 June 2026, roughly 3.1 and 3.5 million copies a year.

Why It Bends

Two Re-Releases Made Up 73.9% of Recent Copies

Sega's tables isolate the answer. In the year to March 2026 the series counted 3.22 million copies. Persona 5 Royal supplied 1.42 million and Persona 3 Reload 0.96 million, together 2.38 million, or 73.9%. The same pair was 2.53 of 3.58 million (70.7%) a year earlier and 2.82 of 5.06 million (55.7%) the year before that.

Neither is a new game. Royal is an expanded edition of Persona 5, and Reload is a remake of Persona 3. By 31 March 2026 Sega counted 8.66 million lifetime copies for Royal, including its 2022 remaster but not the original Persona 5, and 2.97 million for Reload, including its Switch 2 version.

The same table carries a caution. Yearly copies fell 36%, from 5.06 million in the year to March 2024 to 3.22 million in the year to March 2026, so each year now adds less than the 2024 peak. April to June 2026 printed 1.04 million, the best quarter since Reload's launch, though Sega gives no title split.

What Is Off the Chart

Which Published Totals Stay Off the Chart, and Why

Sega's reports print Persona totals too, from about 6.2 million in its 2015 annual report to about 23.5 million in its 2024 integrated report. They do not say which date a total describes, so plotting them on publication dates would misplace them by an unknown amount. The report published in October 2022 shows it: its 15.5 million sits below the 16.8 million Atlus announced five weeks later.

One repeat is worse. Sega's 2025 integrated report, published at the end of October 2025, still says the series passed 23.5 million, the 2024 figure, three months after Atlus announced 27 million. Drawn as a 2025 point it would show the series shrinking, so it is excluded as stale.

Seven of the eight totals are thresholds ('surpassed' or 'achieved' in the publishers' wording); only Atlus's 22.6 million is stated as a count as of a date. Sega's two figures restate milestones Atlus had already announced. Plotting 11.0 million after 11.1 million would open the chart with a drop that no copies caused, so each milestone is drawn once, on Atlus's earlier date. Gaps are counted between plotted dates.

The Three Lines

What Sega's Persona 3, 4 and 5 Figures Can and Cannot Say

Sega Sammy's investor column of 28 September 2026 gives three sub-series figures: Persona 5 at more than 13 million copies, Persona 4 at more than 5.7 million and Persona 3 at more than 5 million. Persona 1 and Persona 2 have no official figure from any source checked.

Only one ordering is safe: Persona 5 is first. 'More than 5 million' could be 5.9 million, which would beat 'more than 5.7 million', so Persona 3 and Persona 4 cannot be ranked against each other. The table lists the lines by game number, not by size.

None of the three has an as-of date, and the column does not say which games each line includes; for Persona 4 it names four and ends with 'etc.'. The floors do not add up to the series either: 5, 5.7 and 13 million make 23.7 million against more than 30 million, and that gap is not a finding, because every term is a floor and some games belong to no line.

'Persona 5 series' has meant different things, too. Atlus used it for 8.3 million (four games, November 2022), 10 million (with spin-offs, December 2023) and 10.46 million (Persona 5 plus Royal, August 2025). Sega's 2025 integrated report prints both 'over 10 million' and '13 million'.

Where the Copies Went

Where Persona's Copies Come From, With Caveats

Sega's column also splits the series total by sales base: North America about 40%, Japan about 20%, Europe about 20% and Asia about 20%, so overseas is about 80%. It is a share by Sega sales base, not by country: the North America base covers the Americas and the Asia base covers Asia plus the Middle East and North Africa. No as-of date is given.

What Comes Next

Two Announced Games Will Test the Line Next

Persona 6 was revealed on 7 June 2026, the day before Atlus announced 30 million, and has no release date. Persona 4 Revival is confirmed for 18 February 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox and PC, according to Sega.

Both will strain the counting. Atlus counts package shipments plus download sales and lists Persona 4 Revival as a Game Pass day-one title, yet neither publisher says whether subscription activations count. A Persona 4 figure published after launch would also date the Persona 4 line.
