TL;DR — Which AI Companies Are Valued Highest, and How Concentrated Is It?

Latest company-announced valuations of four independent AI companies, 2026

Four independent AI companies have announced a valuation in the past 12 months: Anthropic at $965B, OpenAI at $852B, Databricks at $190B and Mistral AI at about $24.4B. The top two hold 89.4% of the combined $2,031.4B, or 98.7% without Databricks, and first is at most about 40x fourth. The lead is only 1.13x, and the two marks were set on 31 March and 28 May 2026, so the order is fragile. The concentration is not. Every figure is a price agreed in a private round, not a market price.

! Five Limits on Reading These Valuations:

  • •
A Valuation Is a Price Paid: What investors agreed to pay in a private round, as the company states it. Not a market price, and not a measure of earnings or resale value.
  • •
The Top Two Carry Different Dates: OpenAI's $852B is dated 31 March 2026 and Anthropic's $965B 28 May 2026, eight weeks apart.
  • •
Databricks Is a Data Platform: It calls itself "the Data and AI company" but sells a data platform, not a model, so it carries a scope label.
  • •
Mistral's Figure Is a Floor: "More than €21B" at ECB 1.1614 gives about $24.4B, so the true value is higher and the 40x gap smaller.
  • •
No Audited Figures Exist: Anthropic and OpenAI have filed S-1s confidentially, so every revenue figure here is stated or reported, not audited.

? The Numbers Behind the Story:

  • •
Anthropic plus OpenAI, share of the four: 89.4% ($1,817B of $2,031.4B)
  • •
    Same share without Databricks: 98.7%
  • •
Anthropic against Mistral AI: 39.6x (at most)
  • •
Anthropic against OpenAI: 1.13x ($113B ahead)

Two companies sit near $1T and two far below. The order at the top can change within weeks; the 89.4% concentration holds either way.

Overview

What This Valuation Ranking Counts, and What It Leaves Out

This ranking covers independent, privately held AI companies and uses one kind of number: the valuation each company last announced for a priced funding round. Four companies qualify, because only four have a company-announced valuation from the past 12 months. Public companies are out of scope, including Nvidia and Microsoft, and so are Google and Meta: an AI lab inside a conglomerate has no valuation of its own. Companies that were bought and figures that are not priced rounds, such as talks, tender offers and secondary sales, are left out too. What public giants spend is a separate question, covered in the capex ranking linked below.

The Three Numbers That Define the Valuation Gap

Three figures frame the story: the share two companies hold, the gap from first to fourth, and the narrow lead between the top two. Each is arithmetic on company-announced valuations.

89.4% Held by Two Companies

89.4%

Anthropic's $965B and OpenAI's $852B add up to $1,817B of the $2,031.4B combined for the four ranked companies. Without Databricks, whose scope is a data platform, the share rises to 98.7%. Databricks holds 9.4% of the total and Mistral AI, at a floor of about $24.4B, holds 1.2%. The marks carry different dates.

39.6x From First to Fourth

39.6x

Anthropic's $965B is 39.6x Mistral AI's figure of about $24.4B, and Mistral's bar is about 2.5% of Anthropic's on a linear axis. Because "more than €21B" is a floor, the true multiple is lower than 39.6x. Databricks sits at 19.7% of Anthropic's figure, and the top two together are 9.6x Databricks.

1.13x Separates the Top Two

1.13x

Anthropic's $965B is $113B above OpenAI's $852B, a ratio of 1.13x. The two marks were set eight weeks apart, OpenAI's on 31 March 2026 and Anthropic's on 28 May. On 31 March Anthropic's last announced valuation was $380B, so OpenAI then led by 2.2x. A reported OpenAI round near $1.4T has not closed.

Anthropic by the Numbers

  • Valuation $965B Post-money, announced 28 May 2026 with its Series H.
  • Raised in Series H $65B Includes $15B previously committed by hyperscalers.
  • Run-rate revenue $47B+ Said to have "crossed" $47B in May 2026, so 20.5x is an upper bound.

The Four Ranked Valuations, With Date and Basis

Latest company-announced valuation in US$ billions, ordered from highest to lowest. Shares are of the $2,031.4B combined total, and Mistral AI's euro figure is converted at the ECB reference rate of 1.1614 dollars per euro on 8 September 2026.

Mistral AI's figure is a floor, so its dollar value and share are minimums and the other three shares would be slightly lower if it were higher. Shares are computed on $24.39B before rounding. Mistral's page carries no date, so 8 September 2026 comes from a deal notice by the law firm Orrick.

Concentration

Why Two Companies Hold 89.4% of the Ranked Value

The four valuations total $2,031.4B. Anthropic's $965B is 47.5% of it and OpenAI's $852B is 41.9%, so the two hold $1,817B, or 89.4%. Databricks at $190B takes 9.4% and Mistral AI at about $24.4B takes 1.2%. Without Databricks, the two hold 98.7% of the three model developers' combined value.

First to fourth is a 39.6x gap, and the axis is linear on purpose. Mistral's bar is about 2.5% of Anthropic's, and that near-invisibility is the finding: on a logarithmic axis, $24B and $965B would look like neighbours. Because Mistral's figure is a floor, the true gap is smaller than 39.6x.

Wider nets change little. Add three older press-reported marks, Safe Superintelligence at $32B, Perplexity at $20B and Thinking Machines Lab at $12B, all 13 to 18 months old, and the top two still hold 86.7%.

First and Second

Why the Order of the Top Two Is the Least Durable Fact

Anthropic leads OpenAI by $113B, a ratio of 1.13x, but the marks are not from the same day. OpenAI announced $852B on 31 March 2026, when Anthropic's last announced valuation was $380B (12 February), 2.2x lower. On 28 May, eight weeks later, Anthropic announced $965B.

Both trajectories are steep. Anthropic went from $61.5B on 3 March 2025 to $183B on 2 September 2025, $380B and then $965B, a 15.7x rise in 14.8 months. OpenAI went from $157B in October 2024 to $852B, 5.4x in about 18 months.

Neither mark is final. Bloomberg reported on 29 September 2026 that OpenAI is in talks to raise about $30B at about $1.4T, which would put it first again, though talks are not a closed round. OpenAI is also reported to be targeting a fourth-quarter 2026 listing at up to $1T, and an Anthropic listing could reprice both.

Scope

Why Databricks Is Ranked Third, With a Scope Label

Databricks announced a valuation of $190B on 13 August 2026 with a $5B strategic round, and did not say whether it is post-money. It calls itself "the Data and AI company", but it sells a data platform rather than a model or an AI assistant, so the ranking labels it a platform, not a model developer.

The choice changes the arithmetic, not the conclusion. With Databricks, the top two hold 89.4% and Databricks is third at 9.4%. Without it, Mistral AI moves up to third and the top two hold 98.7%. Both are given because either treatment is defensible.

Currency and Floors

Why Mistral's Dollar Figure Is a Floor

Mistral AI announced a €3B Series D at a post-money valuation of "more than €21B", a lower bound rather than a point estimate. At the ECB reference rate of 1.1614 dollars per euro on 8 September 2026, that is about $24.4B, so the dollar figure is a floor too.

Floors recur in this field: Anthropic said its run-rate "crossed" $47B and Databricks said it "crossed" $7B. Mistral's release gave no revenue figure, so it is the one company here with no valuation-to-revenue multiple.

What a Valuation Means

Why a Valuation Is Not a Market Price or a Company's Worth

A valuation here is what investors agreed to pay for a stake in a private round, as the company states it. No public market trades these shares, so nothing resets the figure between rounds, and it says nothing about what a company earns or could be sold for.

Headlines carry qualifiers. OpenAI's $122B is "committed capital", not cash received. Of Anthropic's $65B, $15B was previously committed by hyperscalers. OpenAI's earlier headline for the same round was pre-money, which leaves out the new money and is not comparable with the closing post-money $852B. Databricks said only "valuation".

Valuation and Revenue

How Much Run-Rate Revenue Stands Behind Each Valuation?

Three of the four companies stated a revenue figure alongside their valuation. Anthropic said its run-rate revenue "crossed $47 billion" in May 2026, which puts its valuation at 20.5x run-rate. Databricks said it "crossed" a $7B run-rate, giving 27.1x. OpenAI's announcement gave a monthly figure of $2B, which annualises to $24B and gives 35.5x.

Read the multiples with care. "Crossed" is a floor, so Anthropic's 20.5x and Databricks' 27.1x are upper bounds. OpenAI's 35.5x rests on our own annualisation of a monthly figure, not a stated run-rate. A run-rate is a short period multiplied up, not a year of revenue.

No audited numbers sit behind any of this. Anthropic announced a confidential draft S-1 on 1 June 2026, and OpenAI has also filed confidentially, per Bloomberg Law on 9 June 2026. A public S-1 would carry audited figures and could replace most of this context within weeks.

Methodology

Why xAI, Cerebras, Scale AI and Perplexity Are Not Ranked

Four names often appear in lists like this one. Each carries a figure that is a different kind of number from the four ranked.

xAI is quoted at about $230B in press reports, but SpaceX absorbed it on 2 February 2026, so no standalone valuation exists. Its own Series E release on 6 January 2026, for $20B, stated none. SpaceX has traded on Nasdaq as SPCX since 12 June 2026.

Cerebras is usually cited at about $95B, but that is a public market capitalisation, and reports of its debut ranged from roughly $67B on shares outstanding to about $86B fully diluted to the $95B widely quoted. The stock began trading on Nasdaq on 14 May 2026 and its value changes with every trade, whereas a private valuation is fixed once, in a round. One number, three bases, moving daily: that is why it is not on the ranking.

Scale AI's $29B comes from Meta's June 2025 purchase of a 49% non-voting minority stake for $14.3B, which Scale said valued it at $29B (Reuters, 13 June 2025). It is implied by a deal rather than set by a priced round, and it is 16 months old.

Perplexity's $20B is a September 2025 press report from The Information, relayed by Reuters, not a company announcement, and it is 13 months old. Since 2 September 2025 Anthropic's announced valuation has risen 5.3x, from $183B to $965B, so a mark from then cannot sit beside 2026 marks.

Methodology

The Four Companies Left Out, and Why Each Figure Does Not Fit

Figures often quoted for AI companies that are not on the ranking, with the reason each is a different kind of number from a company-announced private valuation.

Verdict

What the Valuation Ranking Settles and Leaves Open

What it settles: two companies stand at $965B and $852B and the other two at $190B and about $24.4B, a first-to-fourth gap of at most about 40x. The top two hold 89.4% of the combined value, or 98.7% without Databricks, whichever of them is first.

What it does not settle: which of the two is larger today, what any of the four earns, or what a public market would pay. OpenAI's reported talks near $1.4T, a public S-1 from either company or an Anthropic listing would each change the figures. Which AI creators score highest on capability is a different question.
